Immerse yourself in luxurious quality with the limited-edition MRG-B2000KT, featuring a breathtaking engraving of the auspicious phoenix in flight — handcrafted in exquisite detail by a master of Japanese metalsmithing. A symbol of good fortune, nobility, supreme happiness, and longevity, the legendary bird has long held a revered place in traditional artisanal crafts.
For this very special timepiece, the bezel evokes the tsuba* iron guard of a Japanese sword. The distinctive dark blue-green kurogane-iro (literally “iron color”) hue, which iron takes on when heated, is achieved with a green DLC coating applied to titanium already treated with a deep-layer hardening process. Handcrafted by metalsmith KOBAYASHI Masao, the bezel is engraved with a spectacular design of a phoenix.
The gradated color of the dial ring captures the dynamic beauty of the phoenix’s graceful flutter. The four bezel screws set with emeralds symbolize wisdom and the power to see the truth. These dazzling elements come together to create one of the most luxurious designs in the MR-G lineup.
Covered in a distinctive crystallized pattern that forms when heat is applied to pure titanium, the case projects the shimmering beauty of the crystalline nie patterns on a Japanese sword blade. We use the same deep-layer hardening process on the case for superior hardness and the brown AIP** coating to project a coppery hue. The Clad Guard Structure protects the crown and buttons, delivering both solid construction and easy operation of watch functions.
Such a robust case demands a sturdy band. The dark green Dura Soft rubber strap is resistant to discoloration, stains, and ageing, and is soft and comfortable for stress-free wear, even on active days. The titanium clasp is finished with the same deep-layer hardening process and brown AIP coating as the case and bezel for enhanced durability.
Metalsmith KOBAYASHI Masao
Third-generation metal craftsman working in Shiga Prefecture’s city of Otsu. Active as a metal engraver as well, with experience studying engraving in Kyoto. Works with a wide range of decorative metal crafts, including crafting shrine and temple fixtures, restoring historic cultural assets, crafting tea ceremony implements, and engaging in artistic craftwork. One of Japan’s premier artisanal metalworkers.
* A metal fitting inserted between the sword hilt and blade to protect the hand that grips the hilt. These decorative sword elements are extremely valuable and often viewed as works of art in themselves. The engraving for this timepiece is based on the phoenix design for the tsuba iron guard of the MR-G katana, also crafted by KOBAYASHI Masao.
** AIP is a surface treatment technology that uses energy from arc discharges to vaporize metal materials instantaneously, turning them into a plasma state and ionizing the elements that form the coating. Compared to ordinary ion plating (IP), AIP enables the formation of films with greater adhesive properties and hardness. The most significant feature of AIP is its ability to vaporize materials in a flash, using intense energy to form uniform, beautiful coatings on a range of metal surfaces. The technology allows MR-G watches to deliver the unique Japanese hues the line is known for, and also supports a rich palette of color variations.
