Is it normal for my diamond to be loose?

Q:  Is it normal for my diamond to be loose?

First of all, don’t panic.  It is fairly common for both center and accent diamonds and gemstones to eventually need to have their prongs tightened. There are times you may even need to replace the prongs to ensure your gemstones don't become loose or fall out.

We highly recommend bringing, not just your engagement ring but all of your jewelry in for a routine cleaning and checking every two months.

We will professionally clean all of your jewelry at no cost to you as well as inspect them for loose settings, bent prongs, worn links and clasps. The more often you wear your jewelry, and what activities you do while wearing it will greatly determine its maintenance intervals.

We especially ask our customers to bring in their jewelry immediately after they bump or catch it on something so we may inspect it. A lot of times, only a trained jeweler will be able to detect a bent prong or weakened clasp as a result of everyday wear and tear.

As you can imagine it is a lot more cost effective to be proactive and tighten a loose diamond rather than replacing the diamond that has fallen out and gotten lost.

Just because a diamond is not loose right now, does not mean that the prongs holding it are not weakened and can suddenly break off when caught on an article of clothing.

Some modern rings may have more delicate settings which compliment the beauty of the center diamond more than older settings which tend to cover up too much of the diamond.

When properly cared for and maintained, your jewelry will provide many lifetimes of enjoyment, and in a sense, will “last forever”.
